Training happens in our café, catering, and condiment social enterprises at 40 Molle St, Hobart. You will learn the skills to feel confident to get your first job or re-enter the workforce in the tourism and hospitality industry. Our training is hands on, with real customers, in our working café and catering spaces. We offer two training programs in kitchen operations and café customer service.
Learn the basics to get your foot in the door as a kitchen hand. Our kitchen training program can be a stepping stone to other kitchen roles, you will learn washing dishes, food preparation, cooking methods and food safety alongside other kitchen skills.
This training program gives you a broad understanding of how to work serving customers, running food and drinks, taking orders, using a point-of-sale system and customer service as well as other hospitality skills.

Being ready for work is about more than just having the skills to do the job. It means understanding your rights at work, how to know if you are being paid correctly, how to dress and prepare for an interview, what to do if you have an issue at work, how to communicate professionally in the workplace, how to read a roster or a bus timetable so you can get to work on time. Our work readiness workshops are small group or individual sessions where you can learn what you need to feel confident as you enter the workforce.
We know that for a lot of people learning the skills to get a job is only part of their journey. We offer support tailored to you and what you need to succeed in your employment journey. That could be assistance with clothing, housing, food access, connection to mental health services, literacy and numeracy support. We will work with you to ensure you have the support you need to succeed at Hamlet and into your next opportunity.
Our training programs are popular and we have a waitlist to join. That means there might be a 3 -9 month wait from when you first apply to being offered a training spot.
Submit an application form and our friendly staff will be in touch to let you know how long you might have to wait before a training space becomes available. When a space becomes available you will be invited to meet with Amy to learn more about our training programs so you can decide if it is a good fit for you.
We will provide t-shirts and aprons for your uniform. You will need black pants and black closed toe, non slip shoes for your training. Everything else you need will be provided.
Our best advice is to come into Hamlet as a customer. You can see how it works firsthand and get a feel for the training space. If you would like to organise a time to chat with Amy about our training programs or you have any further questions get in contact via 0407 169 352 or training@hamlet.org.au
